3 Home Remedies for Heartburn

If you’re one of the 60 million Americans suffering from acid reflux (GERD) listen up. It IS possible to improve your condition with nothing more than natural remedies.

This will not only save you a bundle, but spare you from potential side effects that come with the typically recommended drugs (i.e. H2 blockers, PPI’s, etc.).

For starters, you want to avoid processed foods as much as possible. Refined carbs such as breads and pasta should also be limited. This alone is oftentimes enough to clear up your symptoms within a few weeks.

Heartburn home remedy #1: Apple cider vinegar. While a bit counter-intuitive, many people swear by this method. It’s especially useful if your discomfort is caused by too little stomach acid rather than too much. Just mix 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink away.

Now, how can you tell if you’re suffering from the former rather than the latter?

Simple: if you’re in the first camp, apple cider vinegar will make things better. And if you’re in the second, it will make things worse. Obviously, you should ditch this remedy if the latter occurs and move on to the next.

Heartburn home remedy #2: Raw honey. Honey has great healing, soothing, and anti-inflammatory properties. As such, it’s the perfect solution if you feel your “chest is on fire” following a meal.

Swallow a spoonful when your symptoms come on and this natural remedy will bring about quick relief.

Heartburn home remedy #3: Activated charcoal. Being an adsorbent, charcoal is a potent detoxifier that can bind harmful chemicals and eliminate them through your digestive tract.

It is also a great remedy for reflux. However, be careful if you’re taking other medications as it can decrease their effectiveness. In fact, you shouldn’t take it within a few hours of the former.

With that said, for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms mix 1 tbsp. of activated charcoal with 1 tbsp. of bentonite powder in a glass of water and drink up.

    I use apple cider vinegar whenever I get a hint of this problem, but sometimes that’s just not possible – especially with air travel. What I’ve found to be useful when I can’t reach for the vinegar is the original fruit – an apple. This isn’t always as effective, but an apple’s allowable when passing through TSA screening where a bottle could raise awkward questions.
