Sugar Just As Bad for Your Brain As Your Waistline

Sugar is your #1 enemy when it comes to gaining weight. It not only balloons your waistline, but wreaks havoc on your health overall.

That’s why the Cruise Control Diet limits it as much as possible (and hence why fat loss on this plan is almost effortless). But new research findings should give us all reason to limit it even more.

A new study published in the journal, Neurology, has demonstrated that elevated levels of sugar in the brain (also referred to as “Brain Diabetes”) result in dementia, and more specifically, irreversible memory loss (much like in Alzheimer’s Disease).

The study was conducted by initially taking brain scans of males between the ages of 60-64 who had normal blood sugar. Scans performed four years later showed brain atrophy in the subjects with elevated blood sugar.

And here’s the scary part: their sugar levels were still considered in the normal range. But it gets worse because there’s approximately 150 millions Americans living with these “high-normal” values. Perhaps it’s time to redefine what normal is?

Now, sugar is toxic in itself but the real culprit here seems to be insulin. High levels of this hormone cause microvascular disease, which in turn damages your body throughout (and hence your brain as well).

The important thing to consider is that you can have normal blood sugar but drastically elevated levels of insulin. This is the phenomenon of insulin resistance that develops over time and precedes full-blown diabetes.

In short, the more sugar you eat, the more insulin your pancreas has to secrete in order to clear it from your bloodstream (this is crucial because more than a teaspoon of sugar circulating in your bloodstream can kill you). Now, over time your body becomes desensitized to the effects of insulin, so your pancreas need to secrete even more. Of course, this only makes the problem worse and sets up a vicious circle: more insulin = more desensitization = more insulin.

And keep in mind that this is all happening “under the radar”. It only becomes apparent when your body gets too desensitized to insulin and your blood sugar spikes out of control. But rest assured, the damage is being done throughout this whole time.

So, how can you prevent all of this from happening?

Easy, keep your blood sugar levels low (and your insulin levels even lower). Start by getting a fasting insulin test. Most docs don’t perform this if your blood sugar is in the normal range. Nevertheless, request it so you know where you stand.

Next, get on a sensible diet that restricts sugar. And by the way… sugar isn’t just the white stuff you put in your coffee. In fact, that’s just a tiny fraction of the total amount you eat on a daily basis. Most of it comes from juices, sodas, and all kinds of processed foods. Learn to identify them and cut them out of your diet.

In short, be ruthless about this stuff. Because if you are, not only will enjoy a slimmer waistline and excellent physique… you’ll also enjoy great health and stay dementia-free well into your golden years. What more could one ask for?

      Hi Donald,

      It is best to avoid canned fruits as they are usually packed with sugar. It is best to eat the fruits that we do recommend whole to avoid added sugars and to get the benefit of the fiber that comes with eating the fruit whole.

    I’ve been drinking homemade ice tea all my life it has a cup of sugar in one gallon. I also drink a lot of coffee with sugar. If I try to cutdown my sugar I get really bad head their a substitution that’s will help me.

    I have tried all type of Stevia and I find that it has a bitter taste or after taste. Is there something else beside Stevia.

      I am sorry to hear that.

      Stevia is the best type of sweetener to use. It’s natural so it doesn’t come with the potential side effects of artificial sweeteners such as Splenda and Nutrasweet.
